Walk/Talk Therapy
What is walk/talk therapy?
Walking therapy is when we take our session outside. We walk and talk together instead of sitting in an office setting.
Why would I consider walking therapy?
Some people become blocked or overwhelmed by the intimacy of an office setting. Others find that they must sit for a large portion of their day due to their work circumstances and enjoy the ability to move and talk during their sessions.
Walking therapy is great for athletes, kinesthetic learners, nature lovers, adolescents and those that just feel like they need more movement in their lives.
According to the American Psychological Association, research is starting to show that creativity, self-awareness, emotional awareness and other positive therapy outcomes can heighten during movement.
That may have to do with greater blood flow to the brain, the activation or deactivation of specific brain centers.
It also provides clients with a calming distraction element that allows the mind to become clearer. Movement, especially outdoors, can open up the mind to allow for new creative insights.
Do I have to be in good shape to do walking therapy?
Walking therapy is not a workout. You will set the pace for the sessions. We can walk for part of a session or the entire session. The choice is yours.
It is a way to get out--get out of your head, move your body, feel the air in your lungs, smell the change in the seasons, notice the light during that time of day AND talk about what is going on in your life right now in order to move forward not just with your feet, but how you feel as well.
