Which Train Are You Waiting For?

I’d like to share with you a tale of two trains.

Imagine that for the last several months you’ve been planning an amazing trip.  You’ve booked done all sorts of research, found the best places to visit at just the right times.  You know exactly where you want to go.

When you arrive at the train station to catch your train, you notice that the train is dingy and old.  The seats are worn and ripped in a few places.  Not only does the train not look the way you had expected, but the people on the train look a bit questionable.  Some of them look like maybe they haven’t showered in a while.  And others just don’t seem all that friendly looking.    The entire situation gives you pause.  You double check your ticket to make sure that this IS the correct train.

As you try to decide what to do, you notice another train lined up on the neighboring track.  This train looks brand new.  It practically sparkles it’s so clean.  The seats are plush and look comfortable. The windows are bright and it looks like the ideal traveling vehicle.  No one has boarded the train yet, but you decide to delay your trip and that train instead.  Surely it will be worth being just a bit off schedule.

As you stand on the platform and wait for that train to board, your original train leaves the station.  So you wait.  And you wait.  Soon, another older, dingy looking train pulls in to the the station.  Various types of people get off and board the old train and it leaves.  The sparkling train stays put.  You wait and wait and wait.  No one gets on the shiny train.

It’s getting late now.  Another old train pulls into the station.  People get off, people get on.  The train pulls out and heads on it’s way.

You start to wonder if the beautiful train will ever move.  You start to wonder, “Can I get to where I want to go on this perfect train?  Or will I miss my chance waiting?”

Have you ever been in this position?  Have you ever wanted had a very specific destination in mind, whether it was a place or a relationship or a mindset, and you made a plan to get there, only to find out that how you needed to get there might be on a dirty and uncomfortable train?

Have you ever gotten stuck waiting for the sparkly-comfortable train to leave the station?

I have.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dragged my feet on something because the train to get me there was just a bit too uncomfortable for me.

What about you?  Are you waiting on the wrong train?  What would it take for you to board the train that isn’t perfect, but can get you there?  Does it mean befriending the guy who smells a bit, looks a little rough?  Perhaps that same man tells great stories and makes you laugh during the long trip.  Does it mean you take a risk in your career or personal like even though you don’t know the exact outcome up front?

Sometimes we may need a bit to notice that our perfect train doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
